Everything you need to know about affiliate marketing
‘What is affiliate marketing?’ is a question that gets asked a lot in internet marketing circles and gets answered a lot too. However there still seems to be a lot of confusion, not least because of all the contradictory answers you will find! The aim of this post is to provide you with everything you need to know, and answer the most common questions asked about affiliate marketing, such as:
- What is affiliate marketing?
- Is affiliate marketing a scam?
- How can I become an affiliate marketer?
- How much money can I make affiliate marking?
So, What is affiliate marketing?
In a nutshell, affiliate marketing is when you sell or promote someone’s product or service and in return you get a commission. Now this method of marketing serves both parties well; the fact that as an affiliate marketer you do not need to create or make or buy your own product or service, makes it a great place to get started in the internet marketing arena. From the other person’s point of view, they have people who want to go out there and advertise and promote their product (if it’s a quality product) which saves them time and money.
Is affiliate marketing a scam?
The trustworthiness of any opportunity is always questioned nowadays, and to be honest, with good reason. There are so many ‘great opportunities’ that are actually fake scams and rip offs. Asking yourself whether something looks or feels like a scam is something to be encouraged and should be a crucial part of your research. Affiliate marketing when done in the correct way, is not a scam. You should never have to pay someone to go into an affiliate partnership with them. If they are suggesting you do, that should start alarm bells ringing!
Whilst it is not a scam, that does not mean it’s easy money. There is more to affiliate marketing that just adding a link to a product or service on your website. A lot of companies nowadays have affiliate programs that you have to sign-up for. Some companies are more choosy than others. They might want you to meet certain criteria, such as x amount of visitors to your sight, certain niche criteria and good conversion rates.
How can I become an affiliate marketer?
First of you need to decide what niche you want to work in. A niche is basically a subject or topic that people want information on. Your niche could be about anything from photography or parenting to Chinese cookery or keeping tropical fish. It’s best to start with something you enjoy and/or are knowledgeable about. Some niches are more profitable than others. The more of an expert you are in your chose area, the more value you can add, which puts you at an advantage over others.
There are some niches which are considered to be ‘evergreen’, such as health, wealth and relationships.
Once you know your niche, you need to create a website and get that up and running. Check out our page ‘building a website’ on how to do that.
Once you have your website up and running in you chosen niche, you need to get traffic to it. There are lots of different ways to do this, but one of the most important is to make sure that you are adding content to your website/blog on a very regular basis. This content needs to be interesting and valuable to your readers. This will get them coming back and will also get them sharing your information which will increase your traffic.
Then you need to look at what products and service are relevant to your niche, and get signed up with the affiliate program. In some cases this will be as simple as filling out a form and away you go. In other cases it will take time and effort to start building up trust worthy relationships with potential partners.
How much money can I make affiliate marketing?
There is no definitive answer to this question, it depends on lots of different things. It will depend on your niche, how much value you bring to your website, how much time and effort you put into it, how motivated you are, and what type of affiliate programs you are working with. Affiliate programs can offer commissions in the follow ways;
- Pay per Sale: In this program you are paid a percentage of the sale price once the purchase is completed.
- Pay per Click: In this program the number of visitors you redirect to the Merchant’s website from your own affiliate site, will determine how much you are paid regardless of whether or not a sale is made.
- Pay per Lead: You get paid once the referred visitors provide their contact information on the target site by filling out a simple contact form.
So as you can see some programs may be more lucrative than others. Whilst there is no specific answer to this question, the following earning categories might help you get your head around how much could be made;
- The Newbie – Losing money.
- Minor Experience Affiliate – Anything between $0 – $300 a day.
- Moderate Experience Affiliate – Anything between $300 – $3,000 a day.
- Extensive Experience Affiliate – $3,000 plus a day
- Top Of Their Game Affiliate – $10,000 a day
Now these are very approximate figures, and the idea is to give you a glance at what could be possible. There are people earning these kinds of income, but the other factors above also need to be considered.
So, this should give you some insight into affiliate working and how you can get up and running with it.
