When you are starting your own business online, it can be difficult to know how you are actually doing and whether people are actually seeing any of the content you are working so hard at. This is where the Google SERP tool comes in.
SERP stands for Search Engine Ranking Position. It is a free tool provided by Google, (you’ve got to love Google for all the free stuff they provide!) which allows you to track where your website is ranked for certain keywords.
Today I am going to talk about how to use it, why you should be using and more importantly how to increase it.
HOW TO USE THE SERP TOOL
It is a really simple tool to use and pretty self explanatory. Head over to their website www.serplab.co.uk and click on ‘FREE SERP CHECK’
Make sure you put your location as Global. Then put in your website. You have the option of using up to 10 keywords but do you not have to use them all. You can put in titles of your pages or posts or targeted keywords you are trying to rank for. Press ‘CHECK SERP NOW’ and your results will displayed on the top right hand side. They will indicate where your website ranks in the top100.
This is something you can do from time to time to monitor your website, or if you want to keep a closer eye, you can sign up for a free account and get sent results on a regular basis.
SERP is important because wherever you are ranked will influence whether your business is a success or a failure. So if you are not in the ideal place, SERP will tell you so you can do something about it. When people search for things on Google, research has shown that 68% of people will search the first few options on the first page. Therefore if your website is ranking much lower than that, it is never going to get seen. If your website is never seen, it is never going to make you any money! It is a useful tool for whatever stage of your business you are at. Once you are established online you will want to be sure you are maintaining your ranking and also how you compare to the competition. There is a function that will do this for you too.
HOW DO I IMPROVE MY GOOGLE SERP?
There are a few things you can do to help improve your SERP.
#1 Write great quality posts on a regular basis.
When writing your posts ask yourself some of the following questions.
- Does this provide me with valuable information that I can use?
- Is this easy to read and follow, and does it make sense?
- Is the post at least 1000 words in length?
- Is the content conversational and engaging?
- Is the content specific and to the point?
By writing content that fulfils most if not all of this criteria, you will be meeting Google’s expectations and therefore they will be more willing to rank you higher. Keep it up and they will rank you faster too.
#2 Get people commenting on your posts as often as possible.
If people are commenting on your pages and posts, it stands to reason that Google with then determine you are writing about something worthwhile. They want to provide quality and value to their customers so they will rank websites that they feel do this, faster and quicker. It makes sense right? Getting comments isn’t alway that easy though. You will have to spend some time reading and commenting on other people’s blogs on a regular basis, to encourage them to comment on yours. With in your blog ask people to comment, ask them their opinions and experiences. Also share your posts on social media and ask people and your friends to comment on them. Be sure to always reply to every comment you get as this impresses google too!
#3 Make sure your website is user friendly.
Make sure that when readers come to your website, they can easily navigate their way round. There is nothing more annoying than going to a website that just doesn’t flow or make any sense. Make sure your menus are organized and in order, and your pages and posts are in relevant places under corresponding topics. Are you images relevant? Is it easy to connect with you on social media? (A little tip here, link your website to your Google Plus account as this is another way to increase your ranking). Think about it, if your website is a nice pleasing place to be, people are going to stay there longer and will be more likely to revisit. If it’s not they won’t stay and they’ll never return. Which message do you want to be giving google?
These are a few examples of things you should be doing to help increase your website ranking.
