2016 is fast approaching and now is a great time to start planning for it. A common mistake that people often make is starting the New Year by making resolutions. They wait until new year’s day and then start thinking about how they want to make change and what they want to achieve in that year. Now there is nothing wrong with that, but these stats are not very encouraging;
- 25% of people who have made resolutions, abandon them after 1 week.
- The average person will make the same resolution at least 10 times.
- 60% of people abandon their resolutions by 6 months.
Reasons for these depressing stats include;
- The timing being all wrong.
- A lot are made whilst experiencing a deadly hangover.
- They are things that people feel they should be doing rather than something they have sat down and thought about.
Goal setting is different though and the good news is that goal setting can be a lot more effective if you do in the right way.
Depending on the situation you are in, you might be thinking that 2016 is the year you are going to make a start with creating an online business, or you may have started one and have decided this is the year you’re going to really focus on it and start making it a success.
Either way, there are a few things you can do to make the most of your goals and make 2016 a really awesome year!
#1 Write your goals down
Research has consistently shown that people who write down their goals are more likely to achieve them. Statistic vary, but average at about 42% more likely. Thats pretty impressive I think, especially if you think it about how long it actually takes to write down your goals. Obviously this is not going to automatically mean you achieve all your goals but it is a great start. Most people never take the time to write down their goals. They don’t see the point, or the importance of doing it. By writing down your goals, you are taking them seriously and you’re making a commitment. Go ahead and try it, the actual process of sitting down and writing what you would like to achieve, motivates you and makes you feel great!
#2 Review your goals on a regular basis
The other great thing about writing down your goals, is that you then have a physical and visual reminder of them. This somehow makes them more real. It also means you can review them on a regular basis. I would suggest reviewing them daily, incorporate it into your routine, either when you get up or before you go to bed, or in your lunch break, whatever works for you. Give yourself some dedicated time each day to sit down and really think about your goals. How will you achieve them? How will you know when you’ve achieved them? What will be different? How will you feel? It might sound and feel a bit weird do this, but if you can get over that and really focus on these aspects of your goals, it will feel good and exciting and again is a great motivator!
#3 Make an action plan
This is probably one of the most common areas where people go wrong. They set themselves the end goal but do not necessarily consider how they are going to to get there, Having an action plan of what you need to do, and in what order, will help you to be clear in your head. To make an action plan you will need to break your goal down into tasks which can actually be really useful as it will help you to stay focused and on track. Say for example your goal is to start earning $500 a month with your online business. How many products do you need to sell or sign ups do you need to get to achieve this? What do you need to do to increase sales or sign ups? Do you need to increase traffic to your website, if so how many visitors do you want a day, week or month? How will you do this, how will you monitor it? By breaking your goals down and making an action plan of what you need to do, you can start every day focused and with structure. By reviewing your goals on a regular basis you will know if you are on track and whether you need to make any changes to your action plan.
#4 Don’t be put off if things don’t go according to plan
Achieving your goals is rarely a straightforward path. Things will go wrong, and they won’t work out how you intended. This really is part of the process. Again this is where a lot of people go wrong. They give up as soon as something goes wrong, and figure that it’d too hard and they won’t achieve it. People who have achieved great success have all had things go wrong. Be prepared for the fact that on any path to achieving your goals or success, there will be roadblocks, problems, dilemmas, headaches whatever you want to call them! If you can get your head around that and be prepared for them, you can work around them and overcome them. This has been one of the most valuable lessons I have learnt on this journey. For ages, whenever something didn’t go according to plan, I would be that person who just gave up. Now when something goes wrong, I say to myself ‘OK, this is just a road block, how am I going to get round it?’ The amazing thing is that most of the time these issues are actually really easy to figure out! If you get to your target date and you’re only making $300 a month – so what! That is still $300 a month and it’s progress, don’t be a perfectionist!
Now it’s time to go and workout what you to achieve in 2016. Sit down and think and daydream about it for a while. Write it down and then workout what you have to do to get there. Have fun doing it too!
