So, I’ve spoken before about the benefits of getting a mentor, and one of the benefits of the mentor I have, is that he does a fortnightly webinar where he talks and teaches about an aspect of internet marketing. Yesterday was the first webinar of the year and it inspired me to do this post today.
There is so much information out there about ‘internet marketing’ but this is not only a very commonly used term, but it’s also really vague and in my humble opinion open to all kinds of interpretation. Just out of interest Dictionary.com says this about internet marketing:
‘You are seeing web results for internet+marketing because there’s not a match on Dictionary.com’
So it could quite literally mean anything!
Now I am sure it means different things to different people. No one can argue that the internet is not a great business opportunity, it really is. There are so many different ways it can be used to help grow so many different businesses. Perhaps this is the reason why the Dictionary has shied away from putting a meaning to it for now.
So the object of this post is not to put a finite definition to the term, but to just simply explain what I have learnt internet marketing to be in relation to my business and generally the digital information niche and what it involves. Because the digital information niche is the niche in which my business is based, from here on in, when I use the term ‘Internet marketing’ this is what I will be refering too.
You could be forgiven for thinking that Internet Marketing is extremely difficult and complicated. There may be some aspects of it that are more challenging than others, but the fundamental business plan of selling information products online is actually really simple.
It all comes down to creating an effective funnel. This funnel should consist of a handful of things; an auto responder, and optin page, a lead magnet and one or two information products to sell. All of these elements you need to create, or pay someone to create, apart from the auto responder. This is software that you need to pay for.
Take a look at the diagram below for a visual illustration of the basic business model.
To outline what this all means we’ll start with the lead magnet. This is small but succinct piece of information such as a ‘how to’ or ‘top ten tips on..’ eBook or video which you give away in exchange for a person’s’ email address. The email address is collected on the opt-in page which also provides clear information about why your potential subscriber can not live without your lead magnet. Once the person has provided their email address they have become a subscriber. The email address gets stored in the auto responder and this is where your list (of email address’) is kept. The auto responder then automatically sends the lead magnet to the new email address. Your new subscriber is then given the opportunity to become a customer and buy your information product, which compliments the lead magnet and helps them achieve their goal more quickly or more easily. You can add more products to move on to and sell if you wish. Your job is to continually drive traffic to your optin page and grow your list. You can then email your list with new products that you have or that you happen to be an affiliate for.
Now this is a very basic example of how it all works and there is plenty of advice on the do’s and don’t of each element, which is outside of the scope of this post.
One of things my mentor said in his webinar yesterday is that when you have this basic structure or funnel set up, you have the foundation of being able to build a six figure business.
Please don’t misread that statement to mean you will have a six figure business! Once setup this system takes time to tweak and develop to make it effective. But this is essentially what the ‘big and successful’ marketers do in their business, and this can be applied to almost any niche.
To give you an idea of where I am in this system, I have my optin page, lead magnet and first product all set up and linked to my auto responder. I am in the process of creating a second product (which is a 6 video module course on list building) to make available for sale. I have started making a few sales on my first product and started to build an email list. To put this into context, it has taken me about a year to get to this point. So any ideas that ‘internet marketing’ is a ‘get rich quick’ scheme you will see are unfounded! However now that I know how to do it, I know that me next funnel (and the next and the next), will not take so long!
So I hope this has clarified what internet marketers do. It’s not really that baffling! The amount of time and money you have along with your technical ability will influence how quickly you move forward. More importantly so will your mind set. If you think that you’ll get rich quick doing this, you’ll be disappointed. But if you’re happy to put in the time and effort it takes, and focus on getting this type of funnel set up, you could well be on your way to 5 or 6 figure income.
