Starting an online digital business can be very overwhelming. If you’ve decided that you want to start a digital business but really don’t know what to do next or where to start, then you’ve come to the right place! Read on to find out exactly what steps you need to take to get your own digital business up and running.
You might be able to see what you want your end result to look like, but getting there probably feels like an impossible task for some of you. That is certainly how I felt when I started. It didn’t help that everyone made it all look so easy!
Today I want to break it down and cover some fundamental skills that are required to create and grow a digital business; learning, planning and accountability. Below I have listed several steps to take that will help you get up and running with starting a digital business.
Choose Your Niche -Yes this is totally obvious but it really is the first step in creating your digital business. You really can’t do much until you know what area you are going to be investing your time and money. The beauty of a digital business is that it can be adapted to nearly every niche, I’ve yet to come across a business idea that could not be created within the digital business model.
My niche is the ‘digital business’ niche and if this is an area that appeals to you but you’re not keen on all the product creation and selling that goes with it, then I have something very special for you at the end of the blog, so be sure to keep reading. If your passions lie elsewhere, that is no problem whatsoever, there are thousands of people making their living running digital businesses in niches ranging from gardening, parenting, health, dating, fishing……the list really is obscure and endless. The most important thing is that your business is something you are passionate about
Create An Information Hub – Traditionally this would be a blog or website, but nowadays having a Facebook Fan page can be equally as effective, for getting started. The point of having an ‘Information Hub’ is that it is a focal point where you can get yourself and your business seen and in front of potential customers. It is where you will showcase your knowledge and provide value, a place where you can communicate with people and show them your true authentic self. This is so so so important, I can not emphasis it enough.
To have a successful business you have to be authentic and trustworthy. By having an information hub and showing your authentic self and providing value on a consistent and regular basis, you will start building your tribe and your followers. These people will then become your customers. Whilst a Facebook Fan page is a great tool for doing this, you will eventually want to get your own blog or website as it will give you much more marketing freedom. However to start with if you’re not feeling confident about creating a blog or website just yet, then a Facebook page is great for getting yourself out there and getting followers. You can redirect to your website at a latter date. I actually started my blog first but now use it alongside my Facebook page and they really compliment each other.
Put Yourself Out There – So I have touched on this a little in the above point. There is no point in creating your information hub if you’re not going to use it. There is also no point in creating an information hub if you’re only going to use it sporadically. Which ever niche you decide on, you need to show up and provide really useful and valuable information, consistently. The internet world is very competitive, for good reason; it really does provide an amazing opportunity for you to be your own boss. But because it’s so competitive people will forget about you and get distracted very easily.
You might have some really useful information to provide but if you’re only doing that every now and then, you can never expect to get on people’s radar and stay there. You have to become someone who is reliable with their content. Get used to putting yourself out there on a daily basis. This sounds a lot, and it is! But how much do you want to be your own boss? Daily content is something to work towards, I started with a weekly blog post and built on it from there. I still only do a weekly blog post but I also post on YouTube and Facebook. Think about creating a schedule as this can make it easier to keep on top of and save you time.
Making Money – These first three points are the things you should put your time and effort into initially and get established. Alongside this though you should also be thinking about what you’re going to be selling. The beauty of the digital business model is that you make them once and you can sell them over and over again. This is why I LOVE this approach.
Now maybe the thought of making your own products terrifies you or puts you off, but it needn’t. I make my own products and I have learnt so much going through this process and i’m still learning. Yes it can be a challenge and can take a bit of time, but it is totally worth it.
My first ever digital product was an eBook which didn’t cost me any money to make, it took about a week’s worth of my time and I am still making money from it 4 years later! That is another reason why I LOVE the digital business model, the costs for getting started can be much lower than other business models.
Get A Mentor – Getting a mentor is something that I would absolutely recommend, I have 2 and it’s made a lot of difference. When you decide to get a mentor will depend on you, the time you have and the money you have. Getting a mentor is an investment, but a very worth while one. They can save you a massive amount of time because they have already done what you are attempting to do, so they can guide you, tell you what to avoid and give you feedback on the things you’re creating.
They are also great for accountability. One of the reasons people don’t get very far in creating their own digital business is because they’re not accountable to anyone but them selves. Being accountable to someone is such a big part of success. Also if you’re not particularly technical (like me!) a mentor can save you from driving yourself mad trying to workout silly frustrating illogical computers!
Mentors come in handy at all stages of digital business, you might decide to get one right away to help you with all the things we’ve covered in this post, or you might get these things started and then decide you want a mentor to help you move forward from there.There is no right or wrong way of doing this. My mentors have mentors so you decide if and when you want one.
When it comes to choosing a mentor do you due diligence and make sure it’s someone who you trust and who is successful. Follow a few people on Facebook, join their groups and get to know them. Speak to other people who have been their students and get feedback. The great thing about the internet is that if someone doesn’t have a very good rep, it’s pretty easy to find out.
