Are You Getting Paid For Going To Work Today?

Happy Leap Year everyone! How are you spending your day? As it’s a Monday I imagine most people are heading off to work. But do you know if you’re actually getting paid?

I was reading frogs-1030283_960_720an article about the history of Leap Year this morning – I know how to have a good time 😉  However the article also addressed  an interesting point that I had never considered before. People who  work full-time  and earn a salary don’t typically get paid for this extra day!

The article which was in the Daily Telegraph, broke it down like this;

“If a person earns the national average salary of £26,500 a year, that works out at £2,208.33 per monthly payslip – which breaks down to £71.24 per day in a 31-day month but a daily wage of £78.87 in February”

So no provisions made for that extra day. Salaried workers, who earn a set amount every month or year regardless of output or hours worked, are expected to put in an extra day at the office for the same amount of money. How does that make you feel? Ok so it’s only once every 4 years, but that’s not really the point is it?

There is a group ‘No work on Leap day revolution’ campaigning to make this day a public holiday.

That is great but the way I see it, I would much rather put my time and energy into creating my own business so that I either choose not work or if I do I at least  get paid. Or better than both those options; I don’t work but do still get paid! How does that sound?

It is this kind of situation that contributes to my motivation to become self reliant financially so I do not find myself in the situation where I am working for free and having no say in it!

Today I am actually A/L so not going to the JOB. I have the whole week off but I will be spending that time getting stuck into building my own business. I do this at every spare opportunity I get. I still have a full time job so this often means working on it in the evening and at weekends. It can be hard work and it’s a commitment, but I honestly don’t mind! When I read articles like the one in the Daily Telegraph, it just reinforces to me that all this extra work is totally worth it!

Anyway I just thought I’d put it out there to see whether your realised you might be giving away your services for free today. I’d love to know what your thoughts are that and also what motivates you to keep going and work towards your goals. Get in touch and let me know.
