People talk about affiliate marketing all the time, but do you know what it actually is? For people who are new to this internet marketing game, affiliate marketing might seem like a bit of mystery. It certainly was for me, and I am only now getting my head around it! So Part 2 of this mini series will hopefully shed some light on the matter. If you missed part 1 you can check it out here, which went over the pro’s and con’s of affiliate marketing. Sitting here now ready to explain what it actually is, I am wondering whether these two post should have been the other way around, but hey ho!
What Is Affiliate Marketing?
Well it’s a popular way of making money online. It’s also pretty effective if you know what you’re doing. Affiliate marketing is primarily about selling other peoples products and getting a commission for it. But if you delve a little deeper it’s also about creating relationships. As someone who wants to sell other people products, you’ll need to build a relationship with the creators of the products you want to sell and also the people you want to sell them to.
The relationship between the affiliate and the product creator is a 2 way relationship. Product creators use affiliate’s to promote their products, drive traffic and increase sales. However affiliates usually have to be approved by the creator in order to do this. So if you have a good relationship, this process will work a lot better. The relationship between the affiliate and the customer is a bit different. If you, as the affiliate, are driving traffic straight to the product, you’re not really going to build a relationship with your customers, because they’re not really your customers. However if you’re a bit more internet savvy than that and you drive traffic via your own website and squeeze page, you’ll get their details and they then become part of your list. Building a relationship with your list is something that is very important, and when done in the right way, very lucrative. More on that in another post though.
How Does Affiliate Marketing Work?
If you’re thinking about becoming an affiliate, first you’ll need to chose which niche you want to be in, more about that here. You will also need to decide which platform you are going to use to find products and sellers. I will write more about this in another post in this mini series. Once you have that set up and you have approval to sell a particular product, you will then be given your affiliate link. Then (get ready for the geeky bit) when a customer clicks on your affiliate link, cookies will remember the date, time and location (website) of the click on the link. This then connects that particular purchase to you and your affiliate link, and that is how you are awarded the commission.
So there you have it, short and sweet, but in a nut shell that is what affiliate marketing is. Once you get the hang of doing this with one or two products, you can scale it up and really promote as many as you like. As your list grows, it really can be very lucrative. It is something am bringing some money in with on a monthly basis and in the process of scaling up. Look out for part 3 coming soon.
Let me know if you’re planning on getting started or if you’ve had any experience or success with it. Even if you’ve had a disaster – share because we can all learn from it!
Bye for now 🙂
